Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study Data Alerts

November 3, 2011

A data file from the Year 9 wave of data collection is now available through the Princeton University Office of Population Research Data Archive. STATA, SAS, and SPSS versions of this file can be downloaded and merged with files from previous waves. This new file contains survey data from the core biological mother and father, primary caregiver, child, and teacher interviews, as well as data from the in-home assessments and observations. See our documentation page for more information about these files.

m3c41a – This variable is not an accurate indicator of mother reports of father in prison at the one-year interview. It is possible the reports in this variable are from the father contact sheet, but we are not able to confirm this information. Therefore, users should rely on other reports of father incarceration.

3-yr scales documentation now includes family mental health history sources & documentation.

m1h3a – significant number of cases coded as other Hispanic/Latino (not specified); we are trying to find additional data on these cases.

m3c16p – value label is not correct; please see the questionnaire for the correct response categories.

fathid3 – 1068 cases (those not in wave at baseline) missing; please use idnum to merge files in the meantime.

Updated Codebooks – Please update your codebooks for the three year files. Older codebooks only listed the first 20 observations of each variable; the new codebooks display the first 20 observations, but account for the sample sizes of the entire data sets.

INCONSISTENT CONSTRUCTED COHABITATION VARIABLES
The baseline construction of mother living with father (cm1cohf) includes married couples whereas the one year construction (cm2cohf) includes only non-married cohabiters. Please be aware of this when using these variables. We will be reconstructing these variables for non-married cohabitation in the next release.

We found and error in a child's birth weight at baseline. The child's weight is listed as 1lb 0oz and should be 7lbs 0 oz. This also affects the low birth weight variable. To fix, you can add the code:

Replace m1a14a1 = 7 if idnum == "3324";
Replace cm1lbw = 0 if idnum == "3324";
